"New Waves" lyrics

SHARED ARMS LYRICS

"New Waves"

The new wave broke along the coast, but here I am,
chained up next to Beauty in the basement once again,
carving memoirs in the walls.
But she’s dreaming herself back to where the water met the sand.
So I shake her- just to wake her- but I should let Beauty be.

See, there’s this friend of mine.
He taught me all I know about the way we intertwine
the magic and the music into one great big design,
and I hope I taught him too. I haven’t seen him in some time.

There was a time when Beauty leapt along 400 highways just to meet us at the end.
And the sweating walls in half-packed halls,
they all met Beauty face-to-face.

And if they could talk, they told her where to dig.

So we’re dancing on the salt rocks,
and we’re losing everything.
But we’re keeping on. Tell us that we’re wrong,
but we’re dancing on the salt rocks once again.

We were driving through the mist
of the spit and blood- of the worry we resist.
But it settled down. It froze us to the ground,
and now the salt we’ve got will thaw us out.
So we’re coming back to town.
See us all unwillingly around.
But we’ll dig to find deposits. We’ll dig until we can’t.

So I’m dancing on the salt rocks,
and I’m waiting for the rain
to melt away what’s left of this. To dissolve the places I won’t miss.
Don’t want to set my eyes on them again.

Beauty, born to bondage and neglect.
She sleeps for weeks and hardly eats, but never will forget.
For every grain, a prayer for rain. For every heart, a second start.
For every dance a threat:

“If it’s silence you wanted, you’ve got it.
If it’s pity, boy, you’ve got plenty.
‘Cause I’m sowing the soil, but you’re salting the garden.
Step out in the light and dance with me!”

So we’re dancing on the salt rocks,
and we’re waiting for the rain.
I’ll soak myself and wet my throat while
Beauty burns what Beauty wrote on basement walls I’ll never see again.

We’re better off with bruises,
blue with truth and black as the hearts gone bad inside our chests,
than cuts so deep that we can’t sleep.
You’ll find her in the west.
She’ll meet me there, eyes wide awake and brighter than most.
Ocean salt in her hair.
One day, where new waves break on the coast.
She’ll meet us there.
