do not make waves
just go about your daily chores
and keep your eyes down on the floor
you don’t really want to rock the boat
you’ve got it pretty good, don’t ask for more
things are relatively great
and good things come to those who wait
you’re represented in our democracy
you don’t really need to participate

do not make eye contact
with that strange woman on the street
yelling with that cardboard sign
write her off as just crazy
and congratulate yourself on being much
more dignified than she

some people crack
but you are much more well-behaved
you’ve got your brain much better trained
to focus on the trivial distractions
and remain docile, complacent, and obey
defer to what your masters say
when common sense starts flaring up
you suppress it right away

you limit conversation to
tv, sex, weather, and sports
democrat vs. republican
the system may have a couple warts
but it’s still the best government that we’ve got
do not make any waves.
